What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of exercise that uncovers your best body. The Method was developed in the 1920’s-1960’s by Joseph Pilates. Joesph Pilates created Contrology, now called Pilates. He arrived in NYC from Germany in the 1920’s; he opened his exercise studio shortly after arriving and it was open for nearly 20 years. He taught everyone, from business men to professional dancers.
I learned about Joseph Pilates from his book, “Return to Life,” and from listening to Jay Grimes reminisce. Jay Grimes, one of my teachers, took from and taught with Joe Pilates. Jay Grimes has lots of fun stories about the evolution of Pilates and what it was like to work with and around him and his wife (who also taught the contrology method). The essence of each story is always that Joe demanded hard work, every body changed for the better, and injuries disappeared.
The exercises strip away layers of tension and bulk by using alignment, breath, and mindfulness. What’s left behind is your true body: long, lean, supple muscle. You will learn how to work from the center out. It will make you sweat, use muscles you didn't know you had, and feel good.
Will Pilates work for me?
Pilates is for everybody. You need to be committed to The Method and mentally ready. It meets you where you are and challenges you safely. You’ll work your entire body incredibly hard and be extremely challenged. No matter what shape you are in you will feel and see results immediately.
